History

Topkapı Palace was commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II between 1460 and 1478, following the conquest of Istanbul. It served as the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire and the official residence of the sultans from the 15th to the 19th centuries. In 1924, shortly after the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, Topkapı Palace was transformed into a museum. Today, it stands as one of the largest palace museums in the world.

Located on the historic peninsula, the palace is surrounded by the Sea of Marmara, the Bosphorus Strait, and the Golden Horn inlet. Spanning an area of 700,000 square meters, it occupies the headland known as Sarayburnu, which was once the site of the Eastern Roman acropolis. It remains one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks.
