ISTANBUL MOSQUES

SULEYMANİYE MOSQUE

Süleymaniye Mosque, located on Istanbul’s Third Hill, is one of the most magnificent examples of Ottoman architecture. Built in the 16th century, it serves as both a place of worship and a historical landmark. Its grand domes, towering minarets, and spacious courtyard reflect the architectural brilliance of the Ottoman era. Visitors are captivated by its stained-glass windows, intricate calligraphy, and peaceful ambiance. The mosque also offers panoramic views of the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus, making it a favorite destination for tourists. Open to visitors outside prayer times, it provides a serene atmosphere for exploration and reflection

History

Commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the famous architect Mimar Sinan, the mosque was completed in 1557. It symbolizes the height of the Ottoman Empire’s power and architectural achievement. The complex originally included schools, a library, a hospital, and public baths, showcasing its role as a social and cultural center. The mosque also houses the tombs of Sultan Suleiman, his wife Hürrem Sultan, and Mimar Sinan, adding historical significance. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire, it remained a functional place of worship and a cultural landmark, attracting millions of visitors each year.

Mosque visiting rules

When visiting mosques in Turkey, it’s important to follow these rules and etiquette to show respect for the religious and cultural significance of the site:

  1. Dress Modestly – Women should cover their hair, shoulders, and legs, and men should avoid wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts. Scarves and wraps are often provided at the entrance if needed.

  2. Remove Shoes – Visitors must take off their shoes before entering the mosque. Shoe racks or plastic bags are usually available to store them.

  3. Silence and Respect – Speak quietly and avoid loud conversations. Phones should be set to silent mode.

  4. No Photos During Prayer – Photography is generally allowed, but avoid taking pictures of people who are praying, as this can be seen as disrespectful.

  5. Avoid Prayer Areas – Non-Muslim visitors should stay in designated areas and avoid entering spaces where worshippers are actively praying.

  6. Visit Outside Prayer Times – Mosques are open to tourists but may close during daily prayers (five times a day). The best times to visit are between prayers, especially mid-morning and afternoon.

  7. No Food or Drinks – Eating, drinking, or chewing gum inside the mosque is not allowed.

  8. Children Should Be Supervised – Ensure children are calm and respectful inside the mosque.
