BASILICA'S CISTERN /YEREBATAN SARNICI
Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) is one of Istanbul’s most intriguing landmarks, located near Hagia Sophia in the Sultanahmet district. Built in 532 AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it served as an underground water reservoir for the Great Palace and surrounding areas. The cistern features 336 marble columns, many with Corinthian and Doric capitals, creating a mystical atmosphere enhanced by dim lighting and reflections in the shallow water. Highlights include the two Medusa heads, which are placed sideways and upside-down at the base of two columns, adding to the site’s mysterious allure. Visitors can explore the atmospheric structure and admire its ancient engineering by purchasing a ticket for 25 EURO.
History
Yerebatan Sarnıcı underwent several restorations over the centuries, preserving its structural integrity. After the Ottoman conquest in 1453, it continued to supply water to the Topkapi Palace and surrounding areas. Eventually, it was forgotten until rediscovered by Petrus Gyllius, a French traveler, in the 16th century. The cistern underwent further restoration in modern times, including a major renovation in 1985-1987, to prepare it for visitors. Today, it stands as a testament to Byzantine engineering and serves as a popular tourist destination, captivating visitors with its historical and architectural beauty.
